Alfred Meakin Ltd
Alfred Meakin was the brother of James and George Meakin who ran a large pottery company in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent. Alfred Meakin Ltd began in 1875 and was located in Tunstall from the 3 potteries: the Royal Albert, Victoria and Highgate Potteries. Alfred Meakin also manufactured ironstone and white graniteware for export to the US and elsewhere. The Tea Leaf design was the most popular of their designs and was created in the mid 1850's.
Around 1900, Alfred Meakin Ltd created "The World's Largest Teapot" which could hold 20 gallons of tea and was owned by Geoge Pritchard of New York.
Alfred Meakin died in 1904 and was succeeded by his son Alfred James who died only four years later. An uncle - Robert Johnson bought the company for his son Stuart Johnson and it stayed in the Johnson family's hands until 1976 when it became Myott-Meakin before becoming part of the Churchill Group.
